In offshore oil industry, there are possibilities for Man falling in to the sea, which is known as Man overboard in oil industry terminology. Man overboard is possible due to any accidental tripping and fall from the oilrigs, processing facilities or ships. Extreme care has to be exercised to avoid Man overboard during any stage of the operations in the oil industry. Even after exercising necessary precautions, if there is any accidental man overboard situation, the individual must know how to survive till he gets rescued. Man overboard may involve one individual or a group of persons depending on any situation.

Survival at Sea course educates an offshore staff to get confidence on surviving in the sea. Various sea survival techniques are taught in this course as prescribed by the Directorate General of Shipping at India. I have attended this course twice till now in India.
