·        Safety Management System (SMS)

I am familiar with the SMS of oil companies like Shell, British Petroleum, Conoco, Cairn Energy, Hardy group of companies. The objectives of the SMS of all companies are almost same and that is to avoid loss of people or property or both. Each company has a different approach to achieve the end result.

In the SMS, there would be a discussion on the organization structure with clear marking on the communication and reporting channels. The responsibility and the authority level of individual persons would be clearly prescribed.

The Loss control mechanism would be discussed and procedures would be laid down in the SMS documentation. Incident & Accident Reporting systems and procedures would be discussed in the SMS. 

In most of the oil companies, familiarization of its SMS is the first training offered for the staff.
